within the map extent, at a nominated cache level, with script. New
properties of CurrentLevel and RequestedLevel, have been added to the
ArcPad Object Model e.g., Map.Layers(“World_Street_map.nmf”).ExProperties(“CurrentLevel”).
GPS
- GPS, GLONASS, and GNSS satellites are distinguished in
the GPS Position Window.
- Activating the GPS when launching a new QuickProject has
been made more robust, eliminating errors (e.g., Error code 5) previously
experienced on some hardware.

and Font Preferences can now be scaled. Use the new control in Toolbar
settings—Dialog Button Size—to control size independently of the Toolbar
Button Size.
- Case sensitivity is enforced in ArcPad for symbology
classification codes, ensuring that coded values are saved correctly and
match coded value domains in the parent geodatabase.
- Exiting ArcPad from the QuickAction menu no longer
crashes ArcPad.
- The Map Objects OnClose event now also works if a New or
Open action is performed, whilst there is a current map document
(previously the event worked only when ArcPad exited.)
- You can now pinch/reverse pinch to zoom in/out on a multi
touch screen.
- When you use a mouse wheel to zoom in/out, the current
position of the mouse cursor is now treated as the centre of the zoom
in/out, keeping that position in focus.
ArcPad Data Manager
- The checkout of data to a network location now also
includes edit forms.
Note: This change has been made to both the ArcPad Data Manager for ArcGIS
10 and ArcGIS 9.3. All other changes have been made to the ArcPad Data
Manager for ArcGIS 10 only.
- The checkout of features with a large number of fields has
been made more robust.
- Related table forms created at checkout now ensure that
the form name and feature table names match, meaning forms display
correctly.
- QuickProjectToGeodatabase now gets installed to the
expected file location, ensuring that the script works as designed.
- An empty legend for the Unique Values symbology no longer
crashes ArcMap Data Manager on checkout.
- Layer definitions (APL) in AXF that refer to missing or
incorrect fields no longer crash ArcPad on opening; a serious error is
instead reported to the user.
Customization
- ArcPad opens successfully when ArcPad.apx has been
customized to contain no toolbars (i.e., when users choose to place
toolbars in an applet).
- Tools listed in the ArcPad toolbar now all contain
descriptions.
- Forms stored in ArcPad.apx no longer cause an error
message after closing ArcPad.
- An OnPointerdown event used in custom code no longer
removes all map adornments (e.g., Map Navigator, North Arrow, console).
Documentation
- Spatial views have been added to the list of unsupported
data types for the ArcPad Data Manager in the topic Preparing your Data
for ArcPad. Users are encouraged to use definition queries to achieve a
similar result.
- GPS and navigation documentation have been added and
updated to include reference to support for GLONASS and GNSS satellites.
- Related tables must appear in the .mxd file in order for
related table forms to be created at checkout. The Get Data for ArcPad and
the Related tables topics have been modified.
- The Troubleshooting Synchronization page has been added
for using the ArcGIS Server ArcPad extension.
Installation
- The default ArcPad installation folder is now C:\Program
Files\ArcGIS\ArcPad10.0.
- On Windows 7 and Vista, sample data and other files that
you may edit are now installed at C:\Users\Public\Documents\ArcPad.
Windows 7 and Vista will automatically display the ArcPad subfolder in
your own personal Documents folder.
- On Windows XP, sample data and other files that you may
edit are now installed at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\ArcPad.
A shortcut is placed in your own personal My Documents folder in the
ArcPad subfolder.
Support for ArcGIS Online Basemaps
- ArcGIS Standard and Premium (Bing) basemaps can be added
as a background layer to your ArcPad map.
- Premium (Bing) basemaps can be used in the field for a
24-hour period.
Improved Performance
- The time required to start redrawing a map (after panning
or zooming) is significantly faster than in ArcPad 8.
- The user can interrupt a map that is redrawing to continue
to interact with it (e.g., zoom in further before the total map is
redrawn).
- Particularly noticeable on VGA devices is the availability
of more memory for the map.
- Less double drawing is apparent.
New Feature Creation with One Tap—QuickCapture
- A new dynamic toolbar is included in the default toolbars.
- Up to three features from each layer in a map are included
by default.
- The QuickCapture toolbar can be customized from the Table
of Contents within ArcPad to display the features that the user wants (e.g.,
all features of a layer can be added to the toolbar, or some/all removed).
- Users can choose to hide the attribute form completely (if
no fields are required) so that features can be swiftly added just on the
map.
Enhanced ArcPad Data Manager for ArcGIS 10
- New spatial indexing is created at checkout that provides
improved drawing experience of AXF layers in ArcPad.
- Custom forms are created for related tables.
- Users can choose picture fields for each layer. ArcPad
then only shows selected picture fields on the Picture tab of the Feature
Properties dialog box.
- Users can choose a picture folder on the desktop so that
at check-in, hyperlinks will be automatically modified to reflect the
correct desktop file path for photos associated with features.
Improved Camera Performance and Photo Experience
- The new camera module works with a greater range of
cameras and supports the selection of a camera from multiple connected
cameras.
- The consistent user interface on the camera module
minimizes guess work when operating the camera.
- When picture fields are chosen while using the ArcPad Data
Manager, only picture fields are displayed on the Picture tab of the
Feature Properties dialog box, simplifying the field user's choices.
- When picture fields are chosen while using the ArcPad Data
Manager, check-in of pictures on the desktop or in the enterprise GIS is
automated.
Integration with ArcLogistics
- The GoTo tool has been enhanced to launch ArcLogistics
Navigator (if installed), in place of the ArcPad standard Line of Sight
navigation.
- ArcLogistics users can add a button to the ArcPad toolbar
that can launch ArcLogistics Navigator.
Consolidated Help
- The ArcPad User Guide and ArcPad Reference Guide have been
consolidated into a single ArcPad Help document.
- The ArcPad Help is installed on the PC when ArcPad is
installed as a .chm file and is available at esri.com.

expected size (CQ00311887).
- Map.CopyToClipboad no longer generates a script error on a
mobile device (CQ00311861).
The following are known issues in ArcPad:
- Publishing map services with ArcPad
capabilities restricted to ArcCatalog—ArcGIS Server allows many
ways to generate a map service (in ArcGIS Server Manager, by
right-clicking on an .mxd file in ArcCatalog and by right-clicking on
ArcGIS Server in ArcCatalog). The ArcPad extension to ArcGIS Server is
only available after initiation of the publishing wizard from
right-clicking on ArcGIS Server in ArcCatalog. The other methods cannot be
used for creating an ArcPad map service. The extension is not available to
these.
- Tools cannot be browsed and selected by PDA hard
menu buttons on some devices—Testing has found that some Windows
Mobile devices do not have preconfigured Menu and Tab buttons. Devices
that are known to have these buttons and therefore can be used to
control the ArcPad toolbars are hw6965, MM6, and GeoXH 2005. Other devices
are continually being tested and will be added to this list as discovered.
- ArcPad does not automatically zoom to the route
created using the StreetMap extension—When users create a route,
the zoom extent remains unchanged. Users can zoom to the route using the
map navigation tools.
- ArcGIS symbology based on multiple fields not
supported—Using ArcMap unique value renderers, multiple values
can be associated with a single symbol. This symbology cannot be exported
to ArcPad.
Language Packs
ArcPad 10.0.2 includes language packs for the following languages:
- Arabic (Egypt) (ArcPad 7.1 Language pack included)
- Chinese (Hong Kong)
- Chinese (Simplified) (ArcPad 7.1 Language pack included)
- Czech
- Danish (ArcPad 7.0 Language pack included)
- Dutch
- Estonian
- Finnish
- French
- German
- Greek
- Hebrew
- Hungarian (ArcPad 7.0 Language pack included)
- Japanese
- Korean
- Lithuanian
- Latvian
- Norwegian
- Pashto (ArcPad 7.1 Language pack included)
- Polish
- Portuguese (Brazil) (ArcPad 8 Language pack included)
- Romanian
- Spanish (ArcPad 7.1 Language pack included)
- Swedish
- Turkish
All language packs included with ArcPad 10.0.2 are automatically installed
on Windows computers when installing ArcPad. However, language packs need to be
individually and explicitly installed on Windows Mobile using the ArcPad
Deployment Manager on a Windows computer. Once a language pack has been
installed on a device, it can be selected from the Locale page of the ArcPad
Options dialog box.
To use a language pack with ArcPad, the locale and codeset must be supported
on the device. The Locale page of the ArcPad Options dialog box only lists the
locales supported on the device. A device's operating system does not
necessarily need to be localized for a particular language in order to use the
language in ArcPad, but the operating system does need to support the language
and code page. For example, users can install the Chinese fonts, or code pages,
on an English Windows computer. Once they have done this, they can use the
Chinese locale with ArcPad even though the Windows computer is still in
English.
Users should contact their local Esri international distributor for information
on available locales for Windows Mobile devices in their region.
